The Research Grant 2013 goes to a SF-Internet Self-Help Tool Project

The EBTA 2013 Research Grant has been awarded to the proposal presented by Rytis Pakrosnis (PhD, Assist.Prof.) and Viktorija Cepukiene (PhD, Assist.Prof.), both from Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas, Lithuania.

The aim of the research project is to create a computer/internet solution-focused self-help tool for adults, and conduct an outcome study on a sample of university students population using standardized outcome measures. The design is a quasi-experimental study with comparison group and pre- to post-intervention evaluations using standardized as well as subjective measures. A sample of around 100 undergraduate psychology students in the experimental group and around the same number of psychology students in the comparison group is planned.

EBTA structures blog

EBTA structures blog            23 October 2012

EBTA has continued to evaluate and discuss its mission and structures during the recent conference in Torun and by the task group assigned for making proposals for new structures.

Discussions in Torun

In Torun the EBTA board formally decided to assign the task-group to come up with one or two possible new structures, including statutes, finances and an estimate of the implications of the suggestions. The suggestions should be made before the Spring meeting in April 20th 2013. The task-group consists of Peter Sundman (coordinator), Helene Dellucci, Ferdinand Wolf, Svea van der Hoorn and Caroline Klingenstierna (resigned 30.9.12).

The board also decided to use the enclosed ‘flower’ structure as a discussion platform for the ongoing discussions about the structures. The ‘flower’ indicates that EBTA could take on new tasks, like hosting SF national associations and training institutes as well as continue with old tasks, like supporting research.

There was a first open meeting for the national associations in Torun. The associations presented themselves and discussed the possibilities for cooperation. More on this topic here http://blog.ebta.nu/task-groups/supporting-national-s-f-associations-cooperation

The participants of the Torun conference were asked to fill in a questionnaire about their expectations of EBT. The results showed that almost all, who answered, wanted EBTA to go on with its present tasks. The majority also wanted to have an on-line journal and information about therapists. About half wanted EBTA to set up a certification system. The certification/accreditation was discussed during an open meeting, where it got both support and criticism.

Task-group in October

The task-group decided in October to use the EBTA web site as a site for the material produced by the task-group and public discussions. – This blog is part of this work. We will try to make it possible for people to voice their best hopes and invite and record communications about the work of the EBTA structure task-group. We will also invite specific people for their contribution / expertise.

At the moment we are working on these issues.

  • EBTA position on accreditation. There are clearly divided opinions. The Eastern European countries are more interested in getting support that SFBT is a serious therapeutic approach. Long time supporters of EBTA do not want EBTA to be a regulalive body. Would their desire be served by EBTA being a research platform?  Could  the ‘flower’ structure host both view points in separate forums?
  • EBTA relationship with National Associations – see proposal on the flower drawing document
  • EBTA as an open source structure / resource rather than a regulating structure.
  • EBTA providing resources and guidelines about SF to structures that regulate, train etc
  • EBTA as a place where documents in a variety of languages can be located. Perhaps volunteers from EBTA make translations into other languages?
  • EBTA as a reputable resource for research repository, or a place with links to where research relevant to credibility, status and stature of SF can be found.
  • What changes do the present statutes allow? How to make changes in the statutes?
  • Does EBTA want to be an institution with something to deliver and to what extant does it act as a connector between other structures?

Next structure task-group meeting is November 11th.

Network ethics

All members have a right to feel welcomed and appreciated

For all members to feel respected it is important to only describe other people, organisations and networks in a way that they themselves would agree is accurate. It is not allowed to campaign against any individual or group. This means that some questions may not be suitable for this forum, and in that case we hope you will use another way of communicating with like minded people or direct to the person or organisation concerned. If you feel that you or someone else is not being treated fairly on this network please contact the web manager as soon as possible. This is a responsibility all members share. This rule will be strictly upheld and individuals who don’t respect this will be excluded.

Give acknowledgements

Practitioners of Solution Focused treatments acknowledge the open source ethos of Solution Focused Practices and give credit to the developers and others they refer to. They make no claims about ownership or exclusive use of Solution Focused ideas. They conduct and report research competently (Peter Sundman et al, SF-practice definition 2012).

This means that if you know who said it first (or who said it to you) – you should write who it was when you refer to it, and if you don’t know who said it to you, but you know you did not come up with it yourself – say that!

Advertisement and information on products, including training and workshops

Network members are advised to be restrictive with forwarding their own products in their role as network members. Please contact the webmaster to suggest ways that this sort information can be available at selected places. If you are arranging a national or local Solution Focused conference please contact the administrator to put this information under “Events”.

Thank you Luc! Retiring EBTA-founding member

Dr Luc Isebaert is retiring from the EBTA-board as of September 2012. Luc is an EBTA founding member and was the first secretary. He organized the first EBTA conference in Brugge and then several EBTA conferences during his time on the EBTA-board. He contributed to enrich and spread Solution Focused Therapy all over Europe.  He has been a very active board-member and every year he hosted the spring board-meeting in Brugge paying attention to ideas, but also on relationships and conviviality. We are so thankful for all the work and inspiration Luc have given so generously during the years on the EBTA-board. For the future we can´t promise not to keep him busy in spite of his retirement, but we will try to manage and give him some rest. We wish good luck with all his future plans and good health.

Child protection work in Tenerife

We are happy to publish the details of the project that was awarded the 2012 research grant. It was awarded Antonio Medina Machin, a postgraduate psychologists studying family intervention by applying a Solution Focused approach to child protection work. His studies focus on, social services, in a local public agency in the Canary Islands, Spain

Description of the project
The project, a quasi-experimental outcome study, focuses on Solution Focused child protection work with children at risk and their families who are under the charge of local public agencies in Tenerife, Spain.

Abstract
This research project explores the changes that occur when a sample of multidisciplinary teams working with children and families in social services applies a Solution Focused approach in child protection work. The impact of the Solution Focused approach on three different kinds of variables will be examined: objective indexes of effectiveness and efficiency; user satisfaction and goals attainment; and beliefs, practices, and burnout of the professionals. An inter- and intra-group quasi experimental design will be used to compare Solution Focused Intervention (SFI) and Intervention As Usual (IAU).

We look forward to the results of this study with great interest and will up date you about the progress of the project.

Best regards,

/ Caroline Klingenstierna, EBTA Web master

What is Solution Focused Practice…?

It was with great curiosity, that I agreed to head the EBTA Solution Focused Practice Definition task-group. I wasn’t sure what would happen when a dozen distinguished Solution Focused experts start to discuss how to define the Solution Focused Practice. Would we end up fighting each other?

Then I remembered Harry Korman and Mark McKergow’s  great article “In-between – Not Inside or Outside”, a radical simplicity of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy’  (link to the article on Harry’s site ). Some others and I feared, then, that it would raise a storm in some circles. Nothing much happened, so maybe we could agree. Maybe a definition of Solution Focused Practice could be useful for someone other than me. I’m already thinking on how to use the definition in my training courses. Maybe the definition could be submitted as a Wikipedia article.

What do you think? Click to read the “Solution Focus Practice Definition
